A different way to put AI to work
Problem first
We solve the thing that's actually costing the business, not what's trendy. AI only shows up if it earns its place.
Built to keep
The business owns a real, working tool their team runs, built with local Canadian talent.
Low risk
Small sprints prove the payoff before anyone commits. If the numbers don't work, we say so.
What we see across the region
Across sectors, the same core problems arise in almost every domain. “We have a traceability problem” or “our reports are always late” usually drills down to the same shape. Recognizing the pattern under the symptom points to the potential impact.
Data trapped in separate systems
Information lives in disconnected tools; someone moves it across by hand.
Weekly hours of re-keying, and a combined view that never exists when it's needed.
Connections so the data flows on its own, into one live, combined view.
Documents built by hand
Templated reports, briefs, and quotes assembled from scattered sources, over and over.
Hours of skilled time per document, drawn away from billable work.
An AI drafts at 80% quality for an expert to review and judge. Built to sharpen judgement, never to rubber-stamp.
Data entered without a check
Information hand-keyed with no validation at entry.
Errors cascade and surface late: under-billing, write-offs, hours spent chasing mistakes.
A check at the moment of entry that catches problems immediately.
No view of performance in time
The numbers that matter aren't visible until it's too late to act on them.
Margin erosion, missed cross-sell, and lapsed accounts found after the fact.
One live view, with anomalies surfaced fast.
Expertise locked in one person
Only one person can do the high-value judgement work.
Their calendar caps the whole business.
A reusable layer that captures their judgement: others draft, the expert verifies.
High-volume inquiries, one at a time
Routine questions and decisions handled manually, one by one.
Ready-to-buy customers slip away to missed or slow responses.
A layer that handles the standard cases and structures the rest for a person.
What we offer
Bring us into a conversation or send a business our way. You stay in the loop as much or as little as you want, and you remain the bridge for your client.
- A session for your team or your members, walking through the problem patterns and shaping a partnership.
- A seat for us in a conversation when AI comes up with a business you serve.
- A referral we action and keep you posted on.
The businesses you serve get hours back, capacity unlocked, and in many cases new revenue. They keep and operate whatever gets built. You get a stickier relationship and a credible answer when AI comes up, without adding to your plate.
How we're set up
The AI Productivity Lab is a non-profit program at Volta, funded by ACOA, with one mandate: make small and medium businesses across Atlantic Canada measurably more productive. We've worked with more than 30 businesses since the program began in late 2025.
We're measured on whether those businesses get better, not on closing a sale. Bringing us in never means handing your member off; the relationship stays yours.
We administer funding worth offering. Many projects qualify for funding that covers most, sometimes all, of the cost. That's something concrete you can put in front of the businesses you serve.
